Description: 

From shoes to backpacks to everything in between, this basket-weaving technique is found throughout Scandinavia, Russia, and the Baltic states. Unlike most European basket-weaving techniques, where the “stakes” and the “weavers” are separate elements, in Oblique Woven (also known as “plaited”) baskets, all elements are active at the same time. Traditionally woven out of Birch bark, we will be using folded paper to weave a basic “Square to Round Sawtooth Rim” basket.

In the morning, we will start with pre-prepared materials to get right into exploring this technique to make your first basket. We will cover all elements of this structure, including the “Sawtooth Rim” technique. In the afternoon, students will learn how to prepare their own materials and start a second basket. We will discuss design, including dimensions, possible materials, the “Smooth Rim” technique, and rectangular construction.

Students should leave the class with one completed basket and one basket in progress.

Student Experience: 

This is an intermediate-level class, and some basket-weaving experience is recommended.
